May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, when we celebrate how Asian and Pacific Islander communities enrich the tapestry of the US. The Mars theme for this month is Ascend Together, and our ARG has chosen to support five highly-rated Asian American non-profit organizations focused on civil rights, legal representation, education and health. Donations to this fund will be evenly distributed to the nonprofits listed here, to support and uplift the AAPI community.

Asians@VMware is a US-based POD with a mission to increase broader Asian representation and inclusion in tech, creating an environment where all Asians can thrive. To achieve this goal our group has three primary areas of focus in 2020 and aim to: 1. Increase the representation of Asian women in tech. While Asians represent 25% of all tech workers, women only make up 4% of those. 2. Increase the representation of Asian demographics outside of Indian and Chinese. 3. Address anti-Asian sentiment arising in our communities around COVID-19. In this fund, we’ve curated a list of nonprofits that are aligned with these goals. Donations to this fund will be evenly distributed to the nonprofits listed here.

May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 which had been primarily constructed by Chinese immigrants. In addition to Bright Funds' list of highly-rated Asian American nonprofits focused on civil rights, housing rights, legal representation, education, and cultural preservation and expression, we also added Boston-based nonprofits and organizations suggested by fellow BCAMers to the list.

Bright Funds has established the 2021 AAPI Heritage Month Fund, composed of highly-rated Asian American nonprofits focused on civil rights, housing rights, legal representation, education, and cultural preservation and expression, all to amplify the community’s voice. Through a single tax-deductible donation to the Fund you will support a group of nonprofits that are working to eliminate discrimination and lift the voices of the AAPI community.

On August 28, the nation will commemorate the 60th anniversary of one of the most poignant events of the last century - the March on Washington and the delivery of the “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The ETS Center for Advocacy and Philanthropy (CAAP) encourages everyone to commemorate this historic event by volunteering with an organization of your choice or by making a donation to the March on Washington Commemorative Fund. The Fund will support organizations whose work reflects the spirit and hope of the Dr King's words.

Lunar New Year is a multi-week event that is considered one of the most important annual celebrations among East and Southeast Asian cultures and communities, though it is celebrated across the globe. Lunar New Year is typically celebrated with wishes for prosperity and good luck in the new year, while spending time with loved ones and paying homage to past generations through a plethora of traditional foods, activities and events. Lunar New Year is the all-encompassing term to represent the vast number of communities that observe the lunar calendar, and traditions vary across cultures. The Lunar New Year Fund was created to spotlight AAPI-led organizations across the country who provide support and resources to Asian-American communities, celebrate and uplift Asian culture, and fight for Asian representation, justice, and equality.
